PLEAS FOR JUSTICE.
Madhukant Kalpit

The whistles of the mills
have lost their voice.
The splendour of Ahmedabad
is lost in slumber
under the quilt of silence.
Having rinsed his face,
shirt flung over his shoulder,
the third shift mill-worker
rubs his eyes to shake off sleep.
Instead of rushing through
the gamel packed with fowl and goats,
He now lies shattered in his cot.
Day and night he blows
whistles of breath
Even the vast expanse of the sky
cannot accommodate
the sighs of his wife
who sits in his house
and laments the past.
Their naked children sleep
in the verandah outside
shrouded in the pall of destiny
Like burnt ashes scattered
round the hearth.
Their eyes catch the reflection
of the pompous chariot
of the fiftieth Independence Day
Passing sonorously by.
In the wee hours of dawn
their daughters now young,
sack hung on their shoulder
set off to rummage through
the garbage searching their fate.
On their fingertips
are deep abrasions of illiteracy.
Picking waste paper
on the tar road they write
with their bleeding fingers
Give us our RIGHTS !
