CAMEL
by Hrudananda Panigrahi

This is my Empire
whose history
is chronicled on papers of sand.
My empire of seclusion
and
hallucinating quiet endless sunshine.
My pathetic parched mind,
the sun-baked sand,
the sky is partly-burnt and faded.
Life here is a dead reed’s roots,
lonesome, gray;
stretches of scorching sand and spiky shrubs;
no raindrops patter here,
no water;
save for the shadows of rows of date-palms,
and endless spells of desperate exhalations.
My feet just drags along
amid a faintly flickering void;
my life-force hurts,
my ribcage hurts,
with a burning sensation;
a poverty-writ green wait
pitifully cinders away.
Lying on the pitiless bed
amid the expanse of dead alleys,
I see in dreams only the raining nights,
the cavorting of streams,
the green monsoon woods
and the looks of a full earth;
as the dream breaks
another day lies ahead –
a terribly ugly day without a path.
The world is a corridor of shallow pretensions –
of the dead Mirage;
sandbeds of hopelessness,
the vacant sky of cloudlessness.
Another name of life is illusion.
Another name of life is thirst.
